What is the role of the Agulhas current system on severe weather event such as floods and tornadoes? Can the moisture produced by the greater Agulhas system be the dominant source for flood producing rains given certain synoptic situations ? Does the moisture produced by the Agulhas Current and the latent heat release by heavy rainfall above the current near the coast have a role in intensifying existing storms? How much of the low level moisture necessary for extreme storms (i.e. those with floods and tornado occurrences) comes from the Agulhas current? To address these questions a flood and two tornadoes that occurred during 14 and 15 December 1998 over South Africa's bordering coastal south and southeasterly regions are studied. |
