TRMM TMI Precipitation
TRMM passes above the Agulhas Current on 14 and 15 December provided useful data for this investigation.Heavy rainfall occurred mainly over the Agulhas Current and coastal region releasing large amounts of latent heat. It was on 15 December however, that the most extreme surface rain rates above the Agulhas Current were recorded by TRMM. The maximum surface rain rates occurred in all three TRMM orbit passes between 25-26 E and 34-36 S where the SST ranged from 22 to 25 C. It is important to note that the maximum rain rates at the surface occurred in line with the tongue of warm Agulhas Current water.

Fig. 9: TRMM derived surface rain rates from TMI only on 15 December 1998 for three consecutive orbit passes (mm/hr).The broken line is the 200 m isobath that represents the edge of the continental shelf.
