Numerical Trajectories

Numerical trajectories were calculated from daily model velocity fields using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The trajectories were initiated at the time and location of the drifter deployments and were terminated at the time co-inciding with the last fix of the real drifters.

In the 0.28° POP trajectory field many of the flow details are essentially incorrect. The coverage of the domain by the 0.28° model trajectories is not uniform and notable regions without simulated trajectories are seen as a result of the trajectories preferentially following coherent flows.
