Eulerian Statistics Mean vectors, principal standard deviation ellipses, kinetic energy of the mean flow (per unit mass) also called the mean kinetic energy (MKE, cm^2s^-2), and mean eddy kinetic energy (per unit mass) also called eddy kinetic energy (EKE, cm^2s^-2) were calculated for both the daily 2°x2° binned drifter data and the daily masked 2°x2° binned model velocities. A James test comparing model and observed mean vector fields was applied. Details and definitions of these Eulerian statistics are given in Appendix A.
