The EKE (cm2s-2) from the drifters, the 0.28° and 0.1° models are compared. Maximum observed values  (~3000 cm2s-2) are seen in the Gulf Stream at around 38°N, 67°W while the lowest values (100-200 cm2s2) are found in the eastern basin and in the North Atlantic Current. The distribution of the EKE is most closely reproduced by the 0.1° model, although unrealistically high values are seen due to the excessively large meander packet of the modeled Gulf Stream and its too zonally directed path.

Histograms of the drifter and model EKEs (cm2s-2) are compared. The distribution of the model variance fields both differ from the drifter variances. EKE values from the 0.1° much more closely matches those of the drifters, although more occurrences of lower EKE values are found in the 0.1° distribution than in the drifter distribution.
