Kuroshio transport south of Japan estimated from in situ oceanographic data and satellite altimeter data

SEASONAL SIGNAL

Seasonal signal in the Kuroshio throughflow transport is compared with that of the transport of western boundary current expected from the interior Sverdrup transport at mid-latitudes (Fig. 7). The Sverdrup transport is estimated on the basis of surface wind field of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The seasonal signal in the Kuroshio throughflow transport is small compared with the theoretical transport. There may be some seasonality, however, that it is low in September and high in December, similar tendency as the theoretical transport.

Fig. 7.
Comparison of seven-year (1993-1999) mean monthly values between the observed Kuroshio throughflow transport (solid line) and the Sverdrup transport at 30 degrees N estimated from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. Heights of boxes show the standard deviation.
