SUMMARY OF SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

  1. To determine the latitudinal extent of the Agulhas Undercurrent along the southwest African continental slope and therefore assess its importance as part of the global thermohaline circulation.
  2. To study the evolution in the velocity, vorticity and water mass structures of the Agulhas Undercurrent along its path, and estimate the dominant forcing mechanisms.
  3. To quantify mixing and entrainment of water masses into the western boundary current system, and compute absolute heat and freshwater fluxes.
  4. To find the patterns of temporal variability of the Agulhas Undercurrent and estimate its mean volume transport.
