Characterisation of mixing
The intrinsic measurement of the ADCP (and one which it makes very
accurately) is of shear, at scales from 10s to 100s of meters, often termed
the finescale or the internal wave band. One of the intriguing questions
is the degree of mixing that occurs between the Red Sea Water and the
Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) within the Agulhas Current. Does
the presence of salty intermediate waters enhance vertical mixing at
mid-depths? We propose to characterize the mixing using finescale
measurements and parameterizations of turbulent dissipation (Polzin
and Firing, 1997; Polzin et al., 1995).
