Satellite (TOPEX/POSEIDON: T/P) and in-situ data have suggested that the Kuroshio meander formation is triggered by anticyclonic eddies originating in the Kuroshio Extension (Mitsudera et al. 2000). To test this hypothesis, a numerical experiment using a high-resolution regional GCM was conducted by initializing the eddy with observed T/P SLA. In this virtual-poster, we present the numerical test results which resemble the observed meander event during 1997-1998. The images and animations presented will reveal the three-dimensional structure of the interaction. Also included is a case study of the anticyclonic eddy-formation in the Kuroshio-Extension.
