The model is based on the Princeton Ocean Model, developed at JAMSTEC (Mitsudera et al.; 2000).  The model has successfully run in different settings, for example with various Kuroshio inflow rates.

In this numerical test, the model was spun-up at fixed 25 Sv Kuroshio inflow and 10 Sv Oyashio inflow/outflow condition for 6 model years.  The meso-scale variability of the Kuroshio Extension is not large and no eddies were shed from the extension region to cause the meander.

Surface and lateral boundary forcings are:

  • Hellerman-Rosenstein wind
  • COADS heat flux
  • Levitas climatology
