Topographic Steering
It is suggested that this feature is due to
topographic steering by the abyssal layer
flow, which is forced to follow the f/h
contours of the bottom topography.
To see if this is in fact true, we examine
twin non-linear simulations, one
including the bottom topography (figure
6a, shown here), the other flat bottom
(figure 6b).
Results indicate that the ridge feature, and
enhanced transport, is absent in the flat
bottomed simulation, providing firm
evidence that the enhanced NHRC
transport is due to topographic steering
by the lowest layer flow.
